Reading Comprehension Strategies for Placement Tests

Reading comprehension (RC) is a high-weightage component of verbal ability in placement aptitude tests. Most companies include at least one passage with 4 to 6 questions. Unlike vocabulary questions, RC rewards strategy and reading efficiency as much as raw language skill — making it one of the most trainable verbal topics in aptitude for placements preparation.

The Questions-First Strategy

Before reading the passage, read all the accompanying questions. This tells you exactly what information to look for during your single careful read. You will locate relevant sentences faster, avoid re-reading the entire passage for each question, and complete the RC section significantly faster. This one technique consistently saves 2 to 3 minutes per RC set in placement tests.

Types of RC Questions

Literal questions ask what the passage directly states — scan for the specific section and read it carefully. Inference questions ask what can be logically concluded — the answer must be supported by the text but will not appear word-for-word in the passage. Vocabulary-in-context questions ask what a word means as used in this particular passage — check how it fits the surrounding sentence, not just its standard dictionary meaning. Tone and purpose questions look for the author's attitude and evaluative language throughout the passage.

Elimination Technique

Eliminate answer choices containing absolute words like always, never, all, or completely — passages rarely support such extreme positions. Eliminate choices that introduce information not mentioned in the passage. Among the remaining choices, select the one most directly and specifically supported by the passage text.

Interview Tips

Practice reading at 200 to 250 words per minute using newspaper editorials from The Hindu or Indian Express, which closely mirror the tone and content of passages used in placement aptitude tests. With the questions-first approach, you will find relevant sections faster and avoid re-reading the entire passage for each question — a habit that wastes time and frequently leads to incorrect answers.
